Multi-block linocut printing workshop

Learn how to make a two-colour linocut print using the multi-block technique.

During the day you will learn about the process, then carve and hand-print your design, using SoftCut lino and oil-based ink. The focus of the workshops will be learning how to use the multi-block technique. In order to do this in one day, designs will need to be simple, to be able to carve them in time. You will have approximately 60 minutes to carve each lino block.

What you will learn
  • Understand how to create a simple two-colour multi-block print.

  • How to plan a design for multi-block printing.

  • How to register (line up) multiple blocks of lino for one design.

  • How to make a registration device at home.

Materials and equipment

Lino cutting equipment will be provided for each student to use on the day, including the use of pre-made registration devices and registration tabs.

  • Two A6 (105 x 148mm) SoftCut lino blocks.

  • A reasonable amount of paper.

  • There will be space and equipment for 4 ink colours. I suggest that we use 2 tones of blue and 2 tones of green. Alternative colours will be available if everyone in the group is happy with them on the day.

Drying times

When printing multiple colours you need to leave the ink to dry between overlapping colours. In this one-day workshop, we will be using oil-based inks. I normally leave 2-3 days between colours before printing the next colour.

Colours can be printed on top of each other on the same day but will print a little soft focus and not as crisp as when they are left to dry between each colour. If the colours are adjacent to each other and do not overlap, they can be printed in one day and stay crisp.
