Monday 8 July 2024 - How to make jigsaw linocut print workshop

July’s linocut workshop was about making multi-coloured linocut prints using the jigsaw technique. Jayne is on holiday from Australia! I managed to gather a group together earlier in the year so that she could attend a workshop while she was in Yorkshire.

Carol created a lino print of Holgate Windmill. Amanda created a print of a gecko, Jayne made a print of a seahorse, and Chrissie created a linocut print of Mullion Cove in Cornwall.

“An opportunity to create a lino print using two colours or more to experience the process of jigsaw lino prints from start to finish.”
“Very thorough and informative. Also very enjoyable.”
“Focused, informative, fun, sociable and inspiring. The workshop showed me exactly what I wanted to learn. My expectations were definitely met! Thank you.”
Very good, all stages were very well explained by Michelle. Lovely garden to sit in for lunch, great tea and cake at the end!”

Saturday, 3 August 2024 - How to make jigsaw linocut print workshop

It was a lovely, creative day learning how to make multi-colour linocut prints using the jigsaw technique. Ashley created a three-colour linocut print of poppies, Rebecca carved a snowdrop print, Karen’s jigsaw linocut print was based on a photo of His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen, and Susan created a Christmas-themed linocut print.

“Really enjoyable, knowledgeable tutor who was able to ensure I got the best out of the two days, including challenging within my capabilities.  A skill I’m going to take further.”
“A fun creative day where you can totally relax and forget all the rest of world exists.”
“The workshop was very informative and educational. There is a lot to learn, but Michelle is a very supportive tutor who is happy to assist and give helpful hints. Very good day for creative people who like learning something new and have an interest in printing.”
“A fun day enjoying printing with lovely people.”

Tuesday, 6 August 2024 - Multi-block linocut print workshop

Four brilliant two-colour prints from today’s multi-block linocut workshop (One print is being kept a secret). Learning how to register each colour is the most important part of this technique, and the same skills can be used in reduction linocut.

Kevin created a two-colour print of a teasel and a butterfly. Stewart created a two-colour linocut print with swallows flying through a landscape. Angela created a linocut print of Sandsend Beach, looking towards Whitby Abbey.

I run these level 3 workshops in my York studio a couple of times a year when there’s demand. Email me to join my waitlist. Alternatively, you can learn through my online course, ‘Multi-block linocut printing,' which can be started at any time from anywhere in the world.

‘A very relaxed and enjoyable way to learn new skills and techniques. Lots of help and advice are given at every stage. The studio is a lovely space and relaxed place to learn in.”
“Very friendly, supportive, informative and well-paced.”
“If you’ve done some linocut, then this is a great course to take to the next step in your learning. As well as ‘cutting’ a good lesson in getting a good print. Flys by and relaxed.”
“Great, very enjoyable. Time went by very quickly and we ended up with great results."

If you want to learn how to make multi-colour prints using the multi-block method, my multi-block online course can be started anytime.

About the author

Michelle Hughes is a North Yorkshire landscape artist. Much of her work depicts the Yorkshire landscape and Yorkshire coast, including the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors.

Michelle loves exploring the British countryside by bike or on foot, camera in hand, capturing ideas for her next prints. Back in her garden studio, Michelle creates simple but stylised silhouettes based on her photographs, and hand carves these shapes into lino. She hand prints with an etching press, using oil-based inks to create tonal blocks of colour.

Michelle’s original linocut prints are limited editions.
